Sustainability in Theory and Practice: We Are Joining the European Sustainable Development Week

European Sustainable Development Week. We have prepared three diverse events exploring sustainability from different perspectives – from mineralogy and the use of local and organic food to responsible kitchen waste management.

You can look forward to the lecture Sustainable Mineralogy, the workshop and seminar Using Local and Organic Food in Public Catering, and the practical workshop Vermicomposting as a Sustainable Approach to Kitchen Waste Management.

Sustainable Amateur Mineralogy

  • When and where: 17 September 2026, 15:00–17:00, Room P1, Building C
  • Lecture with a display of minerals and rocks by Ing. Martin Musil, Ph.D.

Mineral collecting is experiencing a major boom in the Czech Republic and across Europe. People have more time and resources, while the internet provides instant access to information. At the same time, the number of legal collecting sites is decreasing and quarries are closing, making amateur mineralogy an increasingly significant phenomenon – as well as an indispensable partner for science. Join us for a lecture held as part of European Sustainable Development Week. We will explore how to strike a balance between a popular hobby, nature conservation and scientific benefits.

Using Local and Organic Food in Public Catering

  • When and where: 23 September 2026, 9:00–15:00, Meeting Room, Building M
  • Workshop and seminar led by Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jan Moudrý, Ph.D.

The workshop and seminar will introduce the opportunities and benefits of using local and organic food in public catering. The programme will focus on recent legislative changes, examples of good practice, and the experiences of farmers, suppliers and public catering facilities. It will also include a practical workshop aimed at connecting local producers with representatives of catering facilities and identifying specific opportunities for cooperation. The event will provide a space for discussion on sustainability, local supply chains, and ways in which public catering can support local and organic production. Are you interested in these topics? Join us and find out more.

Capacity is limited – advance registration via the link provided in the invitation is required.

The conference invitation is available here.

Vermicomposting as a Sustainable Approach to Kitchen Waste Management

  • When and where: 30 September 2026, 14:00–15:30, Building C – Atrium
  • Workshop with Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Bernas, Ph.D.

Do earthworms belong in the kitchen? Vermicomposting is a well-known method of processing kitchen waste, but managing a vermicomposter properly can be relatively demanding. This practical workshop will show you what belongs in a home vermicomposter and what does not, how much food to give the worms and in what form, how to manage the individual layers of the composter, and how to prevent problems that could put the worms at risk. The workshop will include examples of suitable and unsuitable materials, as well as interesting facts about earthworms and the specific characteristics of different species. The practical part will be complemented by a brief look at sustainability and circularity. Is it possible to avoid unpleasant odours, fruit flies and mess? Come and see how a home vermicomposter works in practice.
