City Shelter

for abandoned and handicapped animals

An integral part of the purpose-built facility is the city shelter for dogs, operated by the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The shelter offers refuge for stray and abandoned dogs from the cadastre of the city of České Budějovice. The shelter houses indoor and outdoor kennels, there is a veterinary surgery available, with permanent staff providing care of animals with often troubled history. As a time-honoured tradition, we have volunteers who come to help walk dogs.

FAQs

We have lost our dog, what should we do?

Please contact the Municipal Police (156), who catch stray dogs and place them in the shelter.

If a dog has been lost outside the cadastral area of České Budějovice, we recommend contacting also Mr Kössl - Animal Rescue – mob. +420 777 214 680.

We have found a dog - what are the next steps?

Please contact the Municipal Police (156), who will collect the lost dog from you.

We cannot (do not want to) take care of our dog any longer - can we place him/her in the shelter?

In a vast majority of cases, the answer is NO! The exception is dogs left by their deceased owners, but even that situation has its rules. If there are any surviving relatives, they are obliged to look after the dog. If this is impossible, the dog can be admitted to the city shelter, but we will ask for a non-refundable one-off deposit in the amount of CZK 5,000, which will cover the costs associated with the stay of the dog in shelter.

Why won’t the shelter accept dogs from private individuals?

Surprisingly, there are many people who get tired of their dogs and try to get rid of him/her for “objective” reasons. The public believes that they can drop their dogs in the shelter at their will, and after arrival at our shelter, they are often taken aback that we will not take their dogs from them. There are several reasons.

  1. The shelter is primarily intended for animals that have lost their homes or are temporarily strayed. If the shelter is full of abandoned dogs, there will be nowhere to place those animals.
  2. A dog’s stay in the shelter is no cheap matter - the construction and maintenance of facilities, utilities, food, veterinary care, fees for caregivers, etc. All these costs must be paid by someone, and it can be hardly expected that public money (to which we all contribute) will be used to sponsor someone’s ill-advised act. Just as you got a dog without our assistance, you must take care of a new home for him/her without us - try advertising, asking your friends, etc.
Do you cater for cats?

We are not equipped for cats. Currently, there is a municipal shelter for cats in Zavadilka, or you may contact the non-profit organization Kočky České Budějovice.

We would like to bring something for the dogs, is it possible?

Our dogs will certainly be happy for your help. If you are interested, the following is a list of ideal gifts:

  • heavy-duty collars with classic metal (or hard plastic) fastening (preferably leather or a solid strap) - for large dogs mainly
  • longs leashes - ideally, switchable leads (we have a plenty of short ones)
  • older blankets (not duvets, sleeping bags, mattresses or anything with filling - dogs like to tear them and could eat the filling)
  • good quality food - dietary, for puppies, senior dogs, etc. - whether kibble or canned

We have an overabundance of sponge biscuits (most dogs have never eaten them and have no desire for them), various dog coloured “sticks”, strap collars with plain plastic buckles (which break easily), supermarket dog food (many of the dogs entrusted to us suffer from digestive problems and find high grain food hard to digest), short leashes.

We are, of course, grateful for any help, but it would be a pity if such help remains unused for the reason that there is a surplus of such materials in our shelter.

The company Loype provided our dogs with tags for identification in case they get lost.

The tags are equipped with a QR code, allowing for easy retrieval of information with a mobile phone if the animal goes missing. This way, the finder can quickly find out the pet's name and the owner's or shelter's contact number, which can significantly shorten the time it takes for the pet to return home.
