How can sustainability be part of everyday life? During European Sustainable Development Week, we focused on three topics at FAT USB that may seem quite different at first glance – mineral collecting, public catering and kitchen waste.

The lecture Sustainable Amateur Mineralogy explored how an interest in minerals can go hand in hand with a responsible approach to nature and how amateur collectors can contribute to scientific knowledge.

Another event focused on the use of local and organic food in public catering. Participants discussed local suppliers, organic production and ways to bring more locally sourced ingredients into public canteens.

The third event was a practical workshop on vermicomposting. Participants learned how earthworms can turn kitchen bio-waste into valuable fertiliser, giving waste a useful purpose instead of simply throwing it away.

European Sustainable Development Week at the Faculty thus offered three practical perspectives on sustainability, touching on nature, food production and everyday life at home.
