On Thursday, 17 September, just before the start of the new semester, final-year students from Strakonice Grammar School visited the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. Their destination was the Department of Applied Chemistry, where a programme focusing primarily on the practical side of chemistry had been prepared for them.
Under the guidance of the head of the department, Martin Šeda, the students toured the research laboratories and had the opportunity to carry out two laboratory exercises in analytical chemistry. This gave them a first-hand look at the environment in which teaching and research take place and an opportunity to experience what working in a university laboratory is like.
After the laboratory session, there was also time to discuss university study opportunities. The students learned about degree programmes offered by FAT USB as well as other study options at the University of South Bohemia. The discussion also covered the transition from secondary school to university and the opportunities and challenges of student life.
FAT USB has a long tradition of cooperation with secondary schools, and visits like this help students discover the practical side of university education and research. We may even meet some of the participants again next year – this time as students of our faculty.
